Bonjour chers amis,
Hello dear friends,
As you may know from the medias, Haiti is a country badly perceived by people. Whom of us would willingly choose to spend their vacations in Haiti? However, many choose to go on the other side of the island, to the Dominican Republic. I think Haiti is beginning to change. They are slowly improving the landscape. They have started an awareness campaign for reforestation. During the following three months, they will plant over 300 000 trees. They’ve also repaved many roads. This is very surprising since most roads used to be in horrible shape for the past 3-4 years. I am starting to think that one day, obviously not tomorrow, but eventually, Haiti will return to being the Treasure of the Caribbean’s.
The temperature is currently in the 89-95ºF during the day and 82-86ºF during the night. Every movement we make is extenuating.
We are currently preparing a new project for the beginning of the next school year. That of opening our own school at the Orphanage, which would be named Joy of Living Institution. We have 13 children of school age for next year. Here in Haiti, the children have three years of kindergarten, in other words, they usually start school at the age of three.
Our children, at the orphanage, have been attending the National School of Tamarin in Santo this year and the results were very poor grades. One of the main problems of National schools is the quantity of students per class. For example, one class in first grade this year had 72 students present, with 52 absents. That’s unbelievable, with only one teacher, who isn’t present each day, it is easy to understand why the results are so horrible!
This is the reason why we are starting our own school with smaller classes and a teacher available to work on each student’s weaknesses. There will be more children from a nearby orphanage who will join our institution.
We will have four classes, kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd and 3rd grade. We will build two structures in our backyard, to protect the children from the sun and rain during classes. We will have two classes in the morning (kindergarten and 1st grade) and two in the afternoon (2nd and 3rd grade). We will have to employ four teachers and start inscriptions soon. Only Fabienne and Widberlin won’t attend our school. Fabienne will be going to seventh grade and Widberlin will continue to attend his current school Ste-Germaine, which is specialised for handicapped children.
This year, I had hired someone to help the children with their homework and lessons during the afternoon. The principal of their school had accepted to take this responsibility for us. And guess what? It was with great pleasure that he gave us a copy of the state programs and guided us to where we will be able to find the other necessary documents.
We have recently met a Haitian woman, Fabiola, who is very educated and is very experienced with Haiti’s education system. She is a big help for us. She is guiding us in every step to take. We wish to offer our children what’s best for them, that is why we are making all these efforts.
For those interested in Widberlin’s development, the orthopaedist had removed his casts for a couple of days. The result was somewhat disappointing. He would not stand on his legs anymore because of the pain. The specialist said that this is normal since he had stretched Widberlin’s leg muscles which still needed to gain strength. We need to work with him a lot, stretching and exercising as well as physiotherapy. He now has half-casts that the orthopaedist fixed with elastic bandages, which may be removed for baths and nap-times. We could have put him in braces, but due to our financial situation, we have improvised.
Véron, had his cast removed two weeks ago, which he had worn for 8-9 weeks. When Dr Ovile, the orthopaedist, removed the cast, it was once again a great deception. His leg had started to bend. When the accident occurred, the growth plaque was affected and so only one out of the two bones in his right leg is growing. This is going to be a very delicate problem. We will need to stop the growth of one bone, stretch the other bone and figure out how to have both legs the same length. We have been referred to another specialist who is very experienced with these kind of situations.
The only thing left to do is pray for the best, so that God’s Will be done.
I would like to thank everyone who has, after my last letter, sent us donations. These are greatly appreciated. Unfortunately, these gifts weren’t sufficient since we are going through a hard time financially. We must pay the rent of the house for the upcoming year next month, which is a total of $4000 USD. Please help these children! Don’t do this for me or Angèle, invest in these wonderful children. They are so adorable and extraordinary. Please allow them to live a better life.
Angèle and I will be visiting in Quebec during the summer, I haven’t been there for one year and I wish to see my children and my parents. We will take this opportunity to have a couple fund-raisers. We will be visiting in some churches to present the project and we will also have spaghetti diners to raise funds. As you see, we are putting in our best efforts for these children whom we love so much.
We wish to hear from you soon
« Bondye beni’w » God bless you
