Hello everyone,
I hope everyone is well. Everything is fine here. Our daughter Angèle is now working with us here in Haiti as coordinator of visiting teams who come to work and live in our guest house. Up until the end of the year 2010, we will be receiving two teams per month, each group for a one-week stay, but in 2011, three teams will be coming every month. It is amazing seeing all the work that is being done by visiting groups.
We presently have a medical team on hand and a lot of work awaits them. They had to treat severe burns on children, some having been burnt for over a week without having been treated whatsoever. Also, four people in their twenties had been involved in a big car accident three days prior and had not received adequate care by another doctor – completely unbelievable ! It's amazing how these people are able to withstand pain. Health problems visiting medical staff most often have to deal with in children are : worms, gall and diarrhoea. As for the adults, the main problems are : stomach aches, acid and vaginal infection. Yesterday, the team met two little girls, ages six and eight, who had been abused. What can be done about that ? People have nothing with which to protect or defend themselves. They are completely helpless.
Let us turn our attention to a somewhat more encouraging matter : little Jean-Eddie. He is constantly getting better. A lot of progress has been noticed in just three short weeks. He is beginning to make noises with his mouth; he is also able to put his tiny hand in ours or on some object. When he arrived here, he could hardly move. However, he is still plagued with pneumonia and coughs abundantly. He has a lot of secretions, causing him to vomit quite often. He also has more than his share of diarrhoea.
As far as food distribution is concerned, all is well. We have been able to increase the amount of families been tended to thanks to monthly financial aid from “Pass the Bread”, a N.Y.-based agency. It is so gratifying being able to help these people in need. Personally, it gives me a sense to life. Our lives would be so much easier in a country such as Canada. Haiti is a country where whatever you need is a complicated issue. However, what counts most in life is to be where God would have you be. Knowing that you are doing good makes us so happy and complete. My only desire is not to accumulate riches on this earth, but to store up treasures in Heaven. Thank you for allowing us to live this experience. Many heartfelt thanks ! God will render it back to you a hundredfold. Hugs and kisses. André and Sylvie.
