October29, 2009 Greetings to all. We wish to thank everyone who prays for us and encourages us. We have finally succeeded in obtaining a car – an almost new 1985 Madza. I think that after a few repairs and a lot of faith, we'll make it ! It is blue and was painted with a roller one uses to paint walls ! It is very original ! Such things are frequent in Haiti, whereas in Canada, we would be ashamed just sending such a car to the scrap yard !But we had to settle on something that respects our budget. It will do fine, of that I am certain (especially after André is finally able to untangle the messy wires that stick out from the dash board area). But God is good – we occupy a nice, comfortable, clean, quiet apartment that is also safe. A lot of big trees embellish the yard (see photo). There is sufficient room to lodge our Haitian friends when they come to visit. We even have a guest bedroom (available when you come to see us). It is very comfortable indeed, especially since I received, as a birthday gift from André, a nice rocking chair for only $25 ! I am really spoiled ! People here work hard and long hours for ridiculously low wages. This week, we have begun a ministry called NSF (Nourrir sa famille – Feeding one's family). We have supplied three mothers with the basic necessities, enabling them to start their own little business. They will cook 20 large portions of black peas rice covered with meat or vegetable sauce which they will then sell to passer-bys on the street. Only one of the ladies will have her permanent spot from which to sell. The other two will proceed up and down the alleys and streets, carrying the rice and sauce on their heads and a pail of water in their hand with which to clean the plates. They were very happy to receive our aid. If everything works out well, these ladies should be able to earn, on a daily basis, the same wages construction workers earn – about $6 US per day which, from their perspective, is very good. The profits they make are entirely their responsibility. If they give a customer a full plate while that same customer can only afford to buy half a plate, that is where their profit dwindles. Sometimes Haitians work very hard but in the final analysis, all the do is change one dollar for four quarters, thus no profit. Please pray that this project gets off to a good start and that we are able to extend it to other mothers in need. As of this moment, it is done on a trial basis. One of the ladies involved has nine children, the other has eight and the third one has four, so these women really need this work. This endeavour, however, represents a lot of work for us. Every day, we must prepare for these ladies whatever it is they will need the following day. These women thus come to our home every day to get their supplies for that particular day. We have to wash and measure every vegetable and shove them through the blender. That way, we are able to store more inside our fridge since these ladies do not own a fridge. We found it necessary to hire a lady (Mrs. Lajoie) for an entire day so that she could cook sufficient amounts of rice to give the workers the following day. Several young people were on hand to “test” the quality of the cooked rice – at least, that is the reason they gave us for wanting to eat the rice ! We so love so much to see this new program help these needy families. As of this date, we still have not been able to visit the orphanage and the school as previously scheduled, due to car unavailability and the start of the NSF program. André had to go several times to Port-au-Prince with Réginald, our 24-year old Haitian friend who helps us greatly and who will supervise the NSF program in our absence. Every day we spend in Haiti brings new challenges (like the time we discovered a mother rat and her three babies in our fridge in the back yard). We have a small generator but lacked gas for three days. Another time, we went one entire day without water due to a pipe breaking in the kitchen; this public transport called “tap-tap” leaving us stranded due to the colour of our skin, and the list goes on and on... These situations not only allow us to grow but it puts our patience to the test! These are the times where our true personalities springs forth ! Please continue praying for us and the NSF program. Should you wish to become financially involved with us as we strive to help these ladies start their own little business, it would be greatly appreciated. Please forward all cheques to : 3536, rue Loiselle, St-Hubert, Québec, J3Y 7X4. Please make cheques payable to : Mission Nouvelle-Vie, with the name ASAM inscribed on the lower left portion of the cheque. An income-tax receipt will be issued for every $25 gift. You can play a vital part in this ministry because without your help, this mission would not be possible. May God bless and keep you ! |
